A free heart Ask the Expert lecture presented by Inova
Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., who typically develop the condition around the time of menopause. Hormonal changes that occur around menopause contribute to many factors that raise the risk of heart disease. These include an increase in blood pressure, a decrease in levels of HDL (good) cholesterol, changes in the way the body processes sugar, and stiffening or weakening of blood vessels.
Bring your questions and join an interactive panel discussion featuring Inova cardiologist Lily Dastmalchi, DO; obstetrician and gynecologist Shawn Davis-Wilensky, MD, who works with the Inova Saville Screening and Prevention Center to help breast-cancer patients navigate menopause; obstetrician and gynecologist Erin Perucci, MD; and Garima Sharma, MD, Director of Cardio-Obstetrics and Director of Cardiovascular Women’s Health at Inova.

Why it matters:
Many women will spend up to 40% of their lives postmenopausal. Yet they are often largely unaware of the symptoms and risks associated with heart disease in women, which is more likely to kill them than all forms of cancer combined. Early detection and treatment, including lifestyle changes, medication and hormone therapy in some cases, can make a big difference in reducing mortality and improving quality of life.
Your next step:
